Astrological
Correspondences
of the Tarot Major Arcana
Astrology
has correspondences to nearly all of the main esoteric arts, and in
particular, the Tarot. We will only be looking at its relationship
to the 22 cards of the Major Arcana (although it does also correspond
to the suits of the Minor Arcana) .
The 12 signs of the zodiac and the 10 planets (counting Sun and Moon)
add up to 22 - therefore, each of the cards of the Major Arcana corresponds
to either a planet or a sign (but not both).
At first, I searched for some "pristine" Major Arcana graphics on
the web - but alas, most sites don't show all the cards in a set...then
I looked through my decks at home, and - because they have all been
used for many years - none of them were pristine either...
So I decided to let go of my Virgo fixation with pristine, and used
a deck that I painted myself (the outline was provided - I just coloured
it in), but because the cards are over 30 years old and have been
heavily used, and because water colour paints run when they get wet,
and a candle might have dripped on a card or two - well, they are
definitely not "pristine", but they ARE very special to me, and one
of my favourites over all. They are extra large, as I use them more
for meditations and spells, than for divination.
They are from the Paul Foster Case deck, from his Builders of the
Adytum lessons, which I took for 14 years. PFC was a member of the
Golden Dawn, and rose quickly in the ranks - then got fed up with
all the secrecy and brought his Theosophical teachings to America.
These cards are from his classes on Tarot and the Qabala (you will
notice the little Hebrew letter in the bottom right corner - there
are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet).
I will not be giving any text meanings of the cards, or why a particular
planet or sign relates to a particular card. Instead, what I would
like you to do is to think, ponder, and meditate on why you think
these particular archtypes go with each other. Even if you are not
very familiar with Tarot, I am sure that just by staring at the card,
and thinking about the basic (and especially esoteric) meanings of
the planets and signs, you can come up with some creative ideas as
to why they are related.
There will actually be a complete lesson on this very subject in the
"Advanced" course - consider this to be a "teaser"...
